Kuala Lumpur, 9 Oct 2009 – USIM won one silver medal and three bronze medals in the International Institutes of Higher Learning Invention Conference and Expo (PECIPTA), organised by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education together with University of Malaya. PECIPTA 2009 was held for 3 days from 8-10 October 2009 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Mahir Mohamed Mokhtar’s “New Source of Citral from Lemongrass Flowers” won the gold medal whilst Prof. Salmah Yusof’s “Rush Tea-Roselle Tablet Tea” and Mr. Halim Mohd Hussin’s “Combat-PSDA” and “RecoTAC-E” won the bronze medal respectively.
USIM submitted 12 designs and innovations in 4 categories, namely Bioscience and Biotechnology, Communication Information and Technology, Physics and Engineering Sciences and Social and Human Sciences. One of the innovations (Multi-class Traffic Packet Switching) by Prof Dr. Kamaruzzaman Seman was chosen to enter the competition at the Main Gallery.
As in past years, PECIPTA 2009 aims to exhibit designs and innovations by local and international universities. Apart from that, it also opens up opportunities to participants to form ties and partnerships for the development of prototypes and their commercialisation.
Among the main objectives of PECIPTA 2009 is to support the government’s efforts in accelerating national growth through the emphasis on research and development. Other purposes include displaying products and designs by local universities that have been successfully commercialised and marketing research expertise that is competitive not only locally but also globally.
