A top official of SITA, a major provider of information technology to the airline industry, predicted that 2011 will be the year in which airlines’ directly controlled distribution will overtake indirect distribution for the first time.
Paul Coby, chairman of the SITA board of directors and former chief information officer of British Airways, told delegates to the SITA Airline IT Summit in Brussels in late June that “if you extrapolate the trend, by 2014 58% of tickets will be sold directly. This channel shift will reduce the share sold through GDSs and online travel agents.”
Coby based his predictions on responses to SITA’s annual Airline IT Trends Survey, produced jointly with Airline Business Magazine.
But, although there is little doubt that airlines want to increase their direct distribution, the airlines’ survey responses may have been more aspirational than predictive.
Direct distribution varies widely according to type of airline and region.
In Europe, network carriers get about 25% of their bookings from their websites, but in Asia, online booking penetration is around 10% to 15%.
Low-cost carriers, on the other hand, get about 75% of their bookings through their websites, and a few, such as Ryanair, get about 99%.
U.S. network airlines typically get about a quarter to a third of bookings through their websites. Call centers and ticket counters add another 5 to 10 points.
Other factors
But websites are not the whole story. The SITA survey found that the biggest chunk of airlines’ IT investment in the coming months and years will be in the mobile channel.
Half the airlines surveyed said they are seeing their IT budgets increase, and they are “ready to spend big” on passenger mobile services and other “transformative” technology, SITA said.
Nine out of 10 responding airlines plan to invest in mobile device-based services for passengers over the next three years. The current focus is on check-in, flight status notifications and electronic boarding passes.
Focus on mobile technology
Distribution is on the airlines’ radar as well when it comes to their investments in mobile technology. A third already sell tickets through the channel, and another 52% plan to by 2014.
Most airlines also plan to extend mobile functionality to include ticket modification, upgrades and sales of onboard services. The airlines see the channel as a way to provide customers with personalized services and offers.
Impact on agents
What does this mean for travel agencies?
In Europe and North America, the high-yield corporate market remains firmly in the hands of travel management companies, whose preferred method of booking is through the GDSs. (American Airlines, perhaps the most avid pursuer of direct distribution among U.S. network carriers, is famously trying to change that, but it has met with resistance from TMCs and their customers.)
Other airlines have expressed a desire for direct connections as well, but they generally have taken a less combative stance.
For the most part, the GDS channel delivers the highest revenue to network carriers. In its lawsuit against Travelport, for example, American noted that about 60% of its revenue is booked through GDSs – 51% of that through traditional brick-and-mortar agencies. But what about that other 9%?
Some airlines are bothered not so much by traditional agency bookings; it is the online agencies’ bookings, which deliver low-yield passengers while incurring the same GDS segment fees, that rankle.
Delta began quietly severing its ties with second-tier OTAs last year, about the same time that American went to war with Orbitz.

TM’S UNIFI HIGH SPEED BROADBAND SERVICE NOW AVAILABLE IN MELAKA
The rollout of Telekom Malaysia Berhad’s (TM) High Speed Broadband (HSBB) service, UniFi continues, with the service now being expanded to Melaka, ahead of the service availability scheduled in 2012 for the state, marking yet another significant achievement in the service roll-out plan. The service was officially launched today by Y.A.B. Datuk Seri Haji Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam, Chief Minister of Melaka, and witnessed by Y.B. Senator Datuk Maglin Dennis D’Cruz, Deputy Minister of Information, Communications and Culture, Datuk Dr. Halim Shafie, Chairman, TM, and Datuk Bazlan Osman, Group Chief Financial Officer, TM.
Commenting on the launch, Datuk Dr. Halim said, “Being the first and premier HSBB service provider in Malaysia, TM is proud to be able to launch our UniFi service in Melaka much earlier than what has been scheduled. On behalf of TM, I would like to extend our greatest appreciation to Y.A.B. Datuk Seri Haji Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam for his undivided support, because under his stewardship, the State Government of Melaka has entrusted us to fulfil the broadband demand of the people here and bring an enhanced and integrated digital lifestyle to the homes of Melaka citizens with the availability of UniFi.”
“Our appreciation also goes to the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture for their commitment in rolling out this national broadband project under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement. This achievement in Melaka is testament to our aspiration to become the preferred communications partner to the Government,” added Datuk Dr. Halim.
With the launch, TM has officially brought UniFi to Melaka and Melaka citizens have started enjoying the service since 15 July, beginning with the residents in the Malim area. By the end of the year, the service will be available to more than 5,600 premises in 15 residential areas connected to the Malim exchange.
In 2012, the coverage will be expanded to the Tangga Batu exchange, with a progressive rollout to other areas to be conducted in phases.
“The State Government of Melaka is excited that the HSBB service is now available and can be enjoyed by the communities in Melaka. We are more than happy to co-operate and collaborate with TM in pushing the roll-out of UniFi in Melaka to a much earlier date, ahead of the initial plan under PPP. I really hope that the provisioning of UniFi will encourage the ICT adoption among the local citizens, and it is in line with the State Government’s aspirations as a Green Technology City,” said Datuk Seri Haji Mohd Ali Rustam.
“The HSBB project is a national infrastructure initiative that is much needed to ensure the competitiveness of our country in the region. It is a catalyst towards transforming Malaysia towards a Knowledge Economy or K-Economy, where we use Information Technology to increase national productivity and competitiveness. HSBB also serves to boost local industry growth in the areas of content, creative multimedia, e-commerce and IT. Indirectly, the HSBB network serves to attract international content providers to base their operations in Malaysia and in turn, encourages national conservation of costs in the long term for consumers and businesses,” said Senator Datuk Maglin Dennis D’Cruz.
Besides UniFi, TM is expanding the availability of its WiFi service in the state, which will have more than 1,200 TM WiFi hotspots by the end of the year up from 700 hotspots available currently. TM is also playing a lead role in efforts to expand broadband penetration to a total of 87,000 households in Melaka.
TM’s rollout of its various services in the state is in support of the Melaka State Government’s aim to encourage the full use of ICT among residents by showcasing Melaka as one of the most developed states in terms of the utilization, availability and access to ICT-related services. This is in line with TM’s commitment to be the preferred partner for the public sector.
Currently, UniFi service is available at 72 exchange areas and has reached total premises passed of 937,000 as at 26 July 2011. The areas include the 60 in the Inner Klang Valley as well Nusajaya in Iskandar Malaysia and industrial areas around the country including 1 in Melaka, 3 in Penang, 1 in Kedah, 6 in Johor and 1 in Negeri Sembilan. TM is well on its way to meet the targeted 1.3 million premises passed by the end of 2012.
UniFi is currently being offered via three residential and three business packages. The residential triple-play packages are VIP5 at RM149 a month, VIP10 at RM199 a month and VIP20 at RM249 a month. Each package comes with voice, high speed Internet and IPTV services.
Businesses packages are BIZ5 at RM199 a month, BIZ10 at RM599 a month and BIZ20 at RM899 a month. Each package comes with a call plan, high speed Internet and a host of complimentary value-added services.
Signed in September 2008, the RM11.3 billion national HSBB project is a Public-Private-Partnership agreement between TM and the Government of Malaysia to develop and deploy next generation high speed broadband infrastructure and services for the nation.
